Laputa: Castle in the Sky – Painting Process

Overdue painting process…

This was for the Crimson Daggers Bloodsports Challenge. We had to change the target audience of a Hayao Miyazaki film while maintaining the look of the characters. To be honest, I’ m quite ashamed on how poorly I constructed the faces here..(That’s why I’m doing more head studies now.)

Some lessons learned:

– LEARN HOW TO CONSTRUCT FACES! Since I did poorly on this one, I had to waste a few hours fixing those faces. Good rendering can never make up for poor construction.

– When painting distant objects, start with its silhouette with a color darker than the sky. Then just paint the highlights and forget about most of the shadows.

– Use textured brushes on most stuff to add some sense of imperfection.

– Painting a dusk scene is very fun because a lot of colors appear in the sky. Take advantage of hard light mode to add more discolorations and don’t forget to use photo references if you’re not sure!
